Call for Volunteers

Individuals are encouraged to apply for the IEEE Women in Engineering International Leadership Conference planning committee. Applications must be received by 7 July 2017. No extensions will be available.

2018 Committee Roles include the following. Sub-Committee chairs may be asked to help identify sub-committee members:

  • Conference co-chair (candidate for 2019 chair)
  • Conference co-chair (candidate for 2019 chair)
  • Website & Design chair (1-2 subcommittee members) – edits throughout the year, peak interaction 1 month before the conference
  • Exhibit chair (3-4 subcommittee members) – engagement throughout the year, peak interaction Oct-Feb
  • Workshop chair (2-3 subcommittee members) – support throughout the year, peak task of reviewing submissions in Nov-Dec
  • Program chair  (3-5 subcommittee members) – support throughout the year, peak task of reviewing submissions in Nov-Dec
  • Volunteer chair (1-2 subcommittee members) – support throughout the year, peak task of reviewing volunteer grant submissions in Dec-Jan, volunteer coordination in Apr-May

Sub-committee chairs and members will be asked to participate in at least one monthly planning team call. In addition, sub-committee chairs and members may participate on additional calls and tasks throughout each month. Estimated time requirements vary but at least 5 hours per month is expected. During peak times, additional time will be required.

For 2018, the committee will also select two (2) co-chairs, who will be candidates for 2019 conference chair. To nominate a person (or yourself) for the position, please complete this form and upload a recent curriculum vitae (CV) that highlights professional and conference experience. The co-chairs should have the following experience and time availability.

  • Experience managing large, complex projects in which the people executing the project do not all report directly to the manager
  • Breadth and depth of experience with conference organization, especially leadership roles
  • Active in the IEEE WIE community
  • Able to set strategic direction (and delegate its execution)
  • Able to commit significant resources to management of the conference (generally speaking, 25% of a full-time position during 2017-18, and increasing to 70% of a full-time position for 2018-19)
  • Experience managing a large (million US$) budget

If you have not previously worked on the planning committee for WIE ILC or a similar-sized technical conference, expect to start in an “entry-level position” as a sub-committee member.

Please understand that even people who do a good job in one year may not be invited to serve in subsequent years. The conference must balance the need to include people with lots of “institutional knowledge” for conference continuity against the need to bring in new people to gain experience and to provide fresh perspectives.

Submissions will be reviewed by a selection committee in July and announcements will be made in early August.
